Eleven candidates for the upcoming Miss Universe beauty pageant on Monday visited two major tourist attractions in Manila as part of their trip to the Philippines.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo, Assistant Secretary Katherine de Castro, and Intramuros Administration (IA) Officer-in-Charge Mercy De Sahagun welcomed the ladies during their trip around the historic Walled City.

“The Department of Tourism (DOT) welcomes the first batch of Ms. Universe 2016 candidates. And this is just a preview of what is to come for the world to see. As we showcase the beauty of our beloved country, the Philippines, it is also important for us make sure to accord them with Filipino hospitality,” said Teo.

The candidates first went to the Lights and Sound Museum in Intramuros, where they were briefed on Philippine history.

The beauty queens also tried Filipino delicacies such as bibingka and puto bungbong at the Pasko sa Intramuros Bazaar along Postigo Street.

Their trip to Intramuros also gave them the opportunity to ride the ubiquitous horse-drawn carriage or kalesa, and witnessed some regional performances.

The candidates wrapped up their tour by paying respect to the country’s national hero, Jose Rizal where they joined Secrary Teo on a wreath laying ceremony.

Joining the group were representatives from Korea, Japan, Philippines, USA, New Zealand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, China, and Vietnam.

The much anticipated Ms. Universe beauty pageant will be held in Manila on January 30, 2017.
